CHARLES EDWARD CHAMBERS [FOOD WILL WIN THE WAR.] 1917.
30x20 inches. Russling Wood, New York.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margin; minor creases in image.
Published by the U.S. Food Administration, this poster reminds immigrants of the beauty, promise and joy of arriving in New York harbor (complete with red, white and blue rainbow and golden buildings), in an appeal for them to help their adopted country save food to feed the Allies. On May 5, 1917, Herbert Hoover was appointed head of the U.S. Food Administration, having already told President Wilson that "second only to military action [food] was the dominant factor" in the war (Rawls p. 112). To reach as broad an immigrant base as possible, this poster appeared in several different languages including English, Italian and Hungarian. The most desirable of all the variations, this is the Yiddish version. Magnes p. 49, Rawls p. 113 (var), Theofiles p. 94 (var).
